Temporarily transporting the audience at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas to an ethereal, snowy scene, Karol performed enchanting solo choreography while partially concealed by a sheer curtain encircling her as she sang “Ivonny Bonita” from 2025 album Tropicoqueta.

As white flurries descended on her, the performer emerged from the chiffon to face the camera in a shimmering silver outfit, singing, “Ella es un escándalo, ella te quita el oxígeno/ Es una obra de arte, ella es punto y aparte, еlla es feliz con lo básico/ Y si la vieras bailando lеnto, es un espectáculo/ Como piensa es brillante, ella es impresionante, todo en ella es romántico.”

Immediately after her showcase, John Legend took the stage to present Karol with the 2026 international artist of excellence honor, praising her historic Coachella headlining set this past April. The prize hasn’t been awarded since 2009, when it was bestowed upon Whitney Houston.

“What an honor, John, that you gave me this award … this is going to be a legend in my career,” Karol punned while making her acceptance speech.

“I want to say, more than anything, this career has given me the most important thing in my life: purpose,” she continued. “I can say things in my songs that become a voice for a lot of people, a healing place, a safe place. I think my life is meaningful because of my music.”

As Karol made to leave the stage, Legend stepped up to reveal that there was one more surprise in store for her: She had also won best Latin album for Tropicoqueta. The vocalist looked shocked upon hearing the news, her draw dropping.

Released in June last year, Tropicoqueta debuted atop the Top Latin Albums chart and reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200. In July, Karol will embark on her Viajando Por El Mundo Tropitour trek, which sold 2 million tickets in just four days.

Karol was nominated for three awards in the general categories, receiving nods for best female Latin artist and best Latin song for “Latina Foreva.”

The American Music Awards are produced by Dick Clark Productions, which is owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a joint venture between Eldridge Industries and Billboard parent company Penske Media.
